Jakarta EE - future directions

Thursday, July 11, 2024 - 11:05 by Neil Patterson

Java will continue to be a mission critical language for organizations of all sizes well into the future. In order to compete with emerging languages for mindshare and wallets of decision makers and development teams, Java must drive initiatives and deliver standards and specifications that will enable innovation in current and new industries. Due to the nature of the working group structure, future-looking activity is typically very technology and next version focused. It is imperative that we have a future-looking group that will do the brainstorming and related research needed to come up with specific, prioritized recommendations that will be delivered to the Jakarta EE and MicroProfile working groups in a timely manner to take advantage of directions in the market.

This interest group is intended to bring together people from inside and outside of Java related working groups, influencers, and other interested parties. It will take on the role of ideation, research, and presentation of recommendations, working closely with the working groups to ensure the ideas are scoped, prioritized, and understood. Recommendations from this interest group are non-binding on the working groups and are intended to provide insights and ideas that working groups do not have time to consider.

Scope

As stated above, this interest group would have a scope of enterprise and cloud-native Java. We would work closely with the relevant working groups (Jakarta EE and MicroProfile) to convey the recommendations in context.

Areas of interest covered by this group would include:

  • emerging technologies
  • new industry use cases
  • integrations
  • messaging/marketing
