Christoph Sommer is a long term SUMO user and contributor and the inventor and main developer of Veins which is the major open source research platform for coupled traffic and network simulation. He already contributed several improvements to the TraCI interface in the SUMO mainline https://github.com/eclipse/sumo/commits/_old/master?author=sommer and published many articles on the interaction of SUMO and other simulators.
