Eclipse KUKSA provides the essential data orchestration layer for the modern Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) ecosystem. It acts as the "connective tissue" between a vehicle’s complex hardware sensors and the high-level software applications that define the contemporary driving experience. By providing a unified way to access and control vehicle data, KUKSA enables developers to build sophisticated automotive services without needing to master the underlying proprietary communication protocols of various manufacturers.
The project is bringing live to the COVESA Vehicle Signal Specification (VSS). By adopting this common domain taxonomy, KUKSA ensures that vehicle data—whether it is battery state-of-charge, tire pressure, or cabin temperature—is represented in a consistent, hierarchical format across different makes and models. This standardization is the key to breaking down the traditional silos of automotive development.
At the technical heart of the project is the high-performance KUKSA Databroker. This component serves as a secure, in-vehicle server that translates fragmented, low-level signals into standardized VSS data points. It offers developers modern, lightweight APIs (such as gRPC and JSON) and dedicated SDKs, effectively abstracting away the complexity of CAN buses or automotive Ethernet.
This architecture enables a "write once, run anywhere" paradigm for automotive software. Developers can build apps that interact with a standard data tree, ensuring portability across diverse vehicle platforms. By providing this open-source "plumbing," Eclipse KUKSA allows OEMs and third-party providers to stop reinventing basic data access layers.
